Prize competitions

Prize competition website design examples

Three designs you can browse. One live site we built. Pick one and we start there.

What makes a good prize competition website?

It proves it is legitimate before it sells anything. Prize, price and closing date immediately, the draw mechanic written plainly, a genuine skill or free entry route, real named past winners, and a checkout that survives a phone on mobile data. Entrants are buying a chance, so the product being sold is trust.

A prize competition site is an ecommerce checkout wearing a different coat, with one extra problem: it has to be obviously legitimate within about four seconds. Entrants are handing money to a site they have never heard of, on the promise that a draw they will not watch is going to be fair.

What usually goes wrong

It looks like a scam

Harsh, but it is the first thought every new visitor has. The design either answers it or loses them.

The rules are buried

How the draw works, when it runs and what happens if entries are low. Hiding it reads as hiding something.

Entry takes too many steps

Every tap between wanting to enter and having entered costs a percentage of them.

No proof of previous winners

The whole model runs on believing somebody actually won last time.

The brief

What it has to do

The prize, the price and the closing date, immediately

Three facts above the fold. Everything else is secondary.

The draw mechanic explained plainly

When it runs, how the winner is picked, and what happens if it does not sell out.

A skill question that works properly

In the UK a free-to-enter route or a genuine element of skill is what separates a competition from a lottery. Build it in, do not bolt it on.

Checkout that survives a phone on 4G

This traffic is overwhelmingly mobile, often from social, often in one sitting.

Past winners, real and named

With their permission. Invented winners are both dishonest and the fastest way to lose the business.

A countdown that is telling the truth

Fake urgency gets spotted, and in this market trust is the entire product.

Grand Draws website, designed and built by HDC Consultancy

Grand Draws

UK cash prize competitions, cash only and skill-based rather than gambling. Every draw runs on its closing date with the full prize paid out, no minimum entries and no rollover, which is a harder promise to build around than the usual model and a much easier one to trust.

  • Guaranteed draw model, no rollover
  • Skill-based entry route
  • Mobile-first entry and checkout
  • Automated draw at a fixed time

Common questions

What should a prize competition website include?

The prize, the entry price and the closing date visible immediately, the draw mechanic explained in plain words, a genuine skill question or free entry route, a checkout that works on a phone, and real named past winners. The entire model runs on an unfamiliar visitor deciding you are legitimate, so everything that builds that belief belongs above everything that decorates.

Are prize competition websites legal in the UK?

Prize competitions and free draws operate under the Gambling Act 2005 and are distinct from lotteries, which generally require a licence. The distinction usually turns on a genuine element of skill or a free entry route of equal standing. That is a question for a gambling solicitor and not for us, and we build to whatever structure your legal adviser signs off rather than deciding it for you.

How is a competition site different from a normal ecommerce site?

Technically it is close: a basket, a checkout, a payment provider. Commercially it is not. An ecommerce buyer gets a product; a competition entrant gets a chance, which means the site is selling trust rather than goods. That changes what goes above the fold, how the rules are presented and how much weight proof carries.

Should the draw be live-streamed?

It is one way to prove fairness but not the only one, and it is not free. An automated draw at a published time with the result posted publicly can be equally credible and far less operationally painful. Grand Draws on this page runs automatically at a fixed time rather than streaming, which was a deliberate choice.

What happens if a competition does not sell enough entries?

Most operators either extend, roll over or scale the prize down, and all three dent trust. Grand Draws guarantees the draw and the full prize regardless of entries sold, which carries real commercial risk but removes the single most common reason entrants stop coming back.

How do competition sites get traffic?

Mostly paid social and repeat entrants rather than search, because the searches that exist are dominated by very large established operators. That makes retention, email and the post-entry experience far more valuable than they look, and it makes the checkout the most important page on the site.
