The 2026 Shropshire SME Website Report
We ran an automated technical audit of 100 real Shropshire small-business websites to see how they measure up in 2026. Here is what we found — and why it matters more than ever now customers are using AI to choose who to hire.
100 sites sampled · 99 analysed · Published August 2026 · By HDC Consultancy, Shrewsbury
38%
of Shropshire SME websites fail a basic technical standard.
Nearly four in ten fall short on at least one of the fundamentals every business website should get right: being secure, working on mobile, loading at a reasonable speed, having a meta description, and giving visitors a clear way to make contact.
The key findings
38%
fail a basic technical standard
HTTPS, mobile, reasonable speed, a meta description and a way to make contact — 38% miss at least one.
42%
take over 3 seconds to load
The point at which over half of visitors abandon a page (Google). Median load time was 2.5 seconds.
28%
have no structured data
More than 1 in 4 have no schema markup at all — making them far harder for AI search engines to read and recommend.
15%
have no clear way to enquire
No form, phone link or email link on the homepage. Only half (50%) had a contact form at all.
How 100 Shropshire websites scored
Percentage of the sites we analysed that passed each check.
The AI-search gap. Only 66% of sites were what we'd call "AI-ready" (structured data + a meta description + real content). As customers increasingly ask ChatGPT, Google AI and Perplexity for recommendations, the businesses without these signals are the ones being left out of the answer.
What this means for your business
The good news: most Shropshire businesses now have a website that is secure and works on a phone. The problem is what happens next — a slow page, no clear way to get in touch, or no signals for search engines and AI to understand and recommend you. Each of those quietly costs enquiries.
The businesses that win locally are rarely the biggest. They are the fastest to find, the easiest to contact, and increasingly the ones AI recommends. If your site is in the 38%, it is a fixable problem — and fixing it is one of the best-value things you can do for your business this year.

In August 2026 we compiled a sample of 100 real Shropshire SME websites across a spread of sectors (trades, hospitality, retail, professional services, health, automotive, manufacturing and other local services) and towns (Shrewsbury, Telford, Oswestry, Bridgnorth, Ludlow, Market Drayton, Newport and more). National chains, directories, web agencies and our own clients were excluded.
Each homepage was loaded in a headless Chromium browser and measured for:
- HTTPS, HTTP status and mobile viewport
- Page load time and Largest Contentful Paint (a Core Web Vitals metric)
- Structured data (JSON-LD schema), title tag, meta description and H1
- Contact methods (form, phone link, email link) and content depth
A site was counted as meeting the basic technical standard if it was secure (HTTPS), mobile-ready, loaded successfully with an LCP under four seconds (or a load time under five seconds), had a meta description, and offered at least one contact method. 99 of the 100 sites loaded and were analysed; one did not respond.
Limitations. These are single-homepage, single-snapshot lab measurements from one location, not a full multi-page or field-data audit — so treat them as a directional picture of the local market rather than a definitive score for any individual site.
For press & media
"Nearly four in ten Shropshire small-business websites fail a basic technical standard, and more than a quarter carry no structured data — meaning they are effectively invisible to the AI search tools customers increasingly use to choose who to hire," according to new 2026 research by Shrewsbury digital consultancy HDC Consultancy.
