Online shops & retail brands

E-commerce website design examples

Three designs you can browse, and two live shops we built. Pick one and we start there.

What makes an online shop actually convert?

Delivery cost and returns policy visible before the basket rather than inside the checkout, a checkout with few fields and no forced account, genuine reviews on the product page itself, and photography that shows the product in use. Unexpected delivery cost is consistently the single largest cause of abandoned baskets, and it is among the easiest things to fix.

Most online shops do not have a traffic problem. They have a checkout problem, a trust problem, or a speed problem, and usually all three.

What usually goes wrong

Delivery cost is a surprise

The single biggest cause of abandoned baskets.

No returns policy in sight

People will not risk it if they cannot undo it.

Slow product pages

Every extra second measurably costs conversions.

Product photos with no context

Cut-outs on white tell people nothing.

The brief

What it has to do

Delivery and returns up front

Before the basket, not inside the checkout.

A checkout with no detours

Guest checkout, few fields, no forced account.

Real reviews, on the product

Not a carousel of quotes on the homepage.

Photography in context

In a room, on a person, in use.

Search that works

Past a certain catalogue size, search is the shop.

Fast, especially on mobile

This is where most of the money leaks out.

Real work, live right now

And here is what we have actually built

Live websites you can click into and use.

threshen.com
Threshen website, designed and built by HDC Consultancy

Threshen

Internal doors, fire doors, frames and ironmongery in every UK standard size, imperial and metric. A catalogue where picking the wrong size is easy and expensive, so the whole site is built around getting the order right first time rather than around the basket.

  • Imperial and metric sizing
  • Fire-door specification guidance
  • Built for ordering right first time
cave4man.com
CAVE4MAN website, designed and built by HDC Consultancy

CAVE4MAN

Garage, workshop and man-cave kit: racking, tool walls, lighting, neon and games-room gear. Live as a browsable catalogue with prices while the shop prepares to open, so the range and the search are earning attention before the first order is taken.

  • Dark industrial brand
  • Catalogue live ahead of launch
  • Built to take orders when it opens

Common questions

What makes an e-commerce website convert well?

Clarity and speed, far more than visual flourish. Delivery cost and returns policy visible before the basket, a checkout with as few fields as possible and no forced account creation, genuine reviews on the product page itself, and photography that shows the product in use. Unexpected delivery cost is consistently the single largest cause of abandoned baskets, and it is one of the easiest things to fix.

Should I use Shopify, WooCommerce or a custom build?

For most independent retailers Shopify is the sensible default: it handles payments, tax, fraud and hosting, and those are not problems worth solving yourself. WooCommerce makes sense when the shop is a smaller part of a larger content site. A custom build is justified only by genuinely unusual requirements, and it is chosen far more often than it is warranted.

How do online shops get found on Google?

Category pages carry most of the weight, with product pages behind them and content filling the top of the funnel. Product titles and descriptions should match how people actually search rather than how your supplier names things. Structured data for products, prices and availability matters because it drives rich results, and buying-guide content reaches people before they have chosen a product at all.

How important is site speed for an online shop?

Directly and measurably important. Conversion drops as pages slow, and mobile is usually where the damage is worst. The common causes are unoptimised images, too many third-party scripts, and app bloat on hosted platforms. Auditing what is actually loading on a product page is one of the highest-return hours you can spend on an existing shop.

Do I need product reviews on my website?

Yes, on the product page rather than collected on the homepage. Reviews reduce the perceived risk of buying something you cannot handle first, and they answer questions your copy did not anticipate. They must be genuine — fake reviews breach consumer protection rules and, since the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act, the enforcement position on them has hardened considerably.

What legal information does a UK online shop need?

Your business name and geographic address, a returns and cancellation policy meeting the Consumer Contracts Regulations, clear pricing including delivery, terms and conditions, and a privacy policy with cookie consent that fires before any non-essential tracking. VAT registration details if applicable. None of this is optional, and getting the cancellation rights wrong is a common and expensive mistake.

Can you improve an existing shop rather than rebuild it?

Usually, and often it is the better call. A conversion and speed audit of an existing shop frequently finds changes worth more than a redesign would deliver, at a fraction of the cost. Rebuilding is justified when the platform itself is the constraint, not when the shop merely looks dated.

How long does an e-commerce website take to build?

Longer than a marketing site, mainly because of the catalogue. The build itself is a few weeks; product data, photography and descriptions are what set the timeline. If you have a large catalogue, getting that data clean before the build starts is the single best thing you can do to keep it moving.
