WordPress vs Astro: Which Is Better for a UK Business Website in 2026?

By HDC Consultancy Team · 11 August 2026 · 8 min read

Short answer: for a typical business or marketing website — where speed, SEO, security and lead generation matter most — a modern static stack like Astro usually wins. WordPress still makes sense when you need a large, self-managed content operation, a specific plugin ecosystem, or non-technical staff publishing daily. Most UK SMEs are better served by the faster, more secure option; the “everyone uses WordPress” default is often the wrong reason to choose it.

Here’s the honest breakdown, without the tribalism.

Speed and Core Web Vitals

Astro wins, clearly. Astro ships almost no JavaScript by default and can serve pre-built HTML from a global edge network, so pages load close to instantly. WordPress sites, especially with a page-builder (Elementor, Divi) and a stack of plugins, are heavier and slower unless carefully optimised.

Speed isn’t a nice-to-have. Over half of visitors leave a page that takes more than three seconds to load, and speed is a direct Google ranking factor. For a lead-generating site, this alone is often decisive.

Security

Astro wins. A static Astro site has no database and no admin login to attack, so the attack surface is tiny. WordPress powers a huge share of the web, which makes it a constant target — vulnerabilities usually come through outdated plugins and themes, and it needs ongoing patching to stay safe.

Roughly even, edge to Astro. Both can rank well. WordPress has mature SEO plugins (Yoast, Rank Math). But Astro’s speed, clean HTML and easy structured data give it a strong technical foundation for both traditional SEO and being read by AI search tools. What matters most is how the site is built, not the badge on it.

Editing and day-to-day updates

WordPress wins here. Its familiar dashboard lets non-technical staff publish and edit freely. If you have someone posting blogs or changing content every day, that matters. Astro can be paired with a modern headless CMS to give a clean editing experience, but for a big self-served content operation, WordPress is hard to beat.

Cost and maintenance

Depends. WordPress hosting can be cheap up front, but the real cost is ongoing: plugin updates, security patching, performance tuning and the occasional thing breaking after an update. Astro sites are cheaper and simpler to host (often on a free-tier edge network) and have far less to maintain — but need a developer for structural changes.

So which should you choose?

  • Choose Astro if your site’s main job is to load fast, rank, look premium and generate enquiries, and you don’t need to edit it every single day. That’s most UK small businesses.
  • Choose WordPress if you (or your team) will be publishing and restructuring content constantly, or you rely on a specific plugin/ecosystem.

At HDC we build on a modern Astro + Cloudflare stack by default, because for the businesses we work with, speed, security and SEO win the enquiry. When a client genuinely needs WordPress, we build it properly — lean and secure — and we’ll always tell you the honest trade-offs rather than defaulting to whatever’s easiest for us.
