What Is GEO? How to Get Your Business Recommended by AI Search

By HDC Consultancy Team · 11 August 2026 · 9 min read

Short answer: GEO — Generative Engine Optimisation — is the practice of making your business easy for AI answer engines (ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Perplexity) to understand, trust and recommend. Where traditional SEO aims to rank a link on a results page, GEO aims to make your business the answer an AI gives when someone asks for a recommendation.

It matters because the way people search is changing. Instead of Googling “electrician near me” and scrolling links, more and more people ask an AI: “who’s a good electrician in Shrewsbury?” — and act on the shortlist it gives back. If your business isn’t in that shortlist, you’re invisible at the exact moment someone is ready to buy.

How GEO differs from SEO

They overlap, but the goal is different:

  • SEO optimises to rank a page in a list of ten blue links. The user still clicks and decides.
  • GEO optimises to be selected and cited inside a single AI-generated answer. Often there’s no list to scroll — just a recommendation.

The good news: most of what makes you strong in GEO also helps your SEO. But GEO rewards a few things more heavily — clarity, structure, and independent trust signals.

Why most local businesses are getting left out

When we audited 100 Shropshire SME websites, 28% had no structured data at all. Structured data (schema markup) is the machine-readable layer that tells an AI what your business is, where it is, and what it does. Without it, an AI has to guess — and it will usually pick a competitor it can read more confidently.

That’s the core GEO problem in a sentence: AI can only recommend businesses it can clearly understand and trust.

How to actually do GEO

There’s no trick, and anyone promising to “hack” ChatGPT should be avoided. GEO is about building genuine, consistent signals:

  1. Structured data (schema). Mark up your organisation, services, location, reviews and FAQs so AI can read your business as a clear entity.
  2. Answer-first content. Write pages that directly answer the questions people ask — with a clear, quotable answer near the top, not buried under 500 words of preamble.
  3. Be a clear entity across the web. Consistent name, address and description everywhere — your Google Business Profile, directories, social profiles. AI cross-references these to decide it can trust you.
  4. Real trust signals. Genuine reviews, real results, being referenced by other credible sites. This is the E-E-A-T (experience, expertise, authoritativeness, trust) that answer engines lean on.
  5. Technical health. Fast, secure, crawlable, mobile-first. An AI can’t recommend a page it can’t reliably read.

What HDC does

We build GEO in from the first line of code — structured data, answer-first pages, clean technical foundations — and we help you build the wider signals (reviews, profiles, consistency) that make AI confident enough to recommend you. It’s the same thinking behind our own 2026 Shropshire SME Website Report and our Shrewsbury web development work.

Being found used to mean ranking on Google. Now it means being the answer.
