Stripe

Secure, reliable payments built into your own site, not a third-party checkout.

Stripe is a developer-grade payments platform that lets a business take card and digital payments directly on its own website. HDC uses Stripe to build proper checkout into the sites and platforms we create, ticketing, e-commerce, deposits, so a business owns its checkout and customer, takes payment securely and instantly, and keeps more of every sale instead of handing a cut to a marketplace.

Where it shines

  • Take payments on your own site, in your own branding, not a redirect
  • PCI-compliant and secure by design, so card data is handled properly
  • Handles cards, wallets (Apple/Google Pay) and more out of the box
  • Reliable, well-documented and trusted by businesses of every size
  • Keeps you closer to the customer and the data than a marketplace does
  • Scales from a single deposit to full e-commerce or ticketing

Trade-offs to weigh

  • Per-transaction fees apply (though usually less than marketplace cuts)
  • It's the payment layer, the surrounding checkout still has to be built well
  • Taking payments brings compliance and refund handling to get right

What Stripe is

Stripe is a payments platform that lets a business take card and digital payments directly on its own website. Instead of redirecting customers to a third-party checkout, Stripe handles the payment securely in place, cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and more, with PCI compliance and fraud protection built in. It’s developer-grade, exceptionally well-documented, and trusted by everyone from small businesses to the largest brands online.

The key idea is ownership. With Stripe, the checkout is part of your site, so you keep control of the experience, the customer relationship and the data, rather than handing all three to a marketplace.

How HDC uses Stripe

We use Stripe as the payment layer inside the platforms we build:

  • We build checkout into the site itself, ticketing, e-commerce, bookings or deposits, in the client’s own branding.
  • We handle payments securely and server-side, so card data is processed by Stripe, not exposed on the page.
  • We connect it to the rest of the flow, recording orders in Airtable and firing confirmations through Brevo.
  • We keep the client close to the sale, owning the customer and the data instead of renting them from a marketplace.

Why we apply it

For businesses where the transaction is the product, an events promoter selling tickets, a shop selling online, third-party marketplaces are easy but costly: they take a cut of every sale and put their brand between the business and its customer. Building the checkout on Stripe flips that, more of each sale kept, the customer owned, the experience seamless and on-brand.

It’s also about trust and reliability. Payments have to just work, and be secure. Stripe is built precisely for that, so a business can take money confidently, at any hour, without worrying about the plumbing.

How Stripe fits our stack

Stripe is the payments layer beneath the platforms we build on Astro and Cloudflare. A checkout page takes the payment through Stripe via secure serverless functions, the resulting order or ticket is recorded in Airtable, and a confirmation or receipt goes out through Brevo. So payment slots cleanly into the same fast, owned pipeline as everything else we build.

When Stripe isn’t the right tool

Stripe is the right choice when a business benefits from owning its checkout and customer, but it isn’t free of effort: per-transaction fees apply, and taking payments brings refund handling and compliance that have to be built properly. For a business that only ever needs a one-off payment link, or that genuinely benefits from a marketplace’s audience, a simpler route may fit. Where owning the transaction matters, though, Stripe is the secure, reliable foundation we build on.

Worked example

Owning the checkout, keeping the margin

Picture an events promoter selling tickets through a third-party marketplace that skims a fee off every sale and sends fans to someone else's branded checkout. We build ticketing into their own site and wire the payments through Stripe: buyers pay securely on-site, in the promoter's branding, and get an instant confirmation, while the promoter keeps more of each sale and owns their customer data. The same pattern works for deposits, bookings or full e-commerce, payment taken properly, on the business's own terms. (Illustrative, every build is scoped to your needs.)

Stripe: your questions answered

What is Stripe?

Stripe is a payments platform that lets businesses accept card and digital payments online. Rather than sending customers off to a third-party checkout, Stripe lets payment happen securely on your own site. It's widely trusted, developer-friendly and used by businesses from startups to global brands.

How does HDC use Stripe for my business?

We build payment directly into the sites and platforms we create for you, ticketing, e-commerce, bookings, deposits, using Stripe as the secure payment layer. That means customers pay on your site, in your branding, you get the money and the data, and everything's handled compliantly behind the scenes.

Is taking payments through Stripe secure?

Yes. Stripe is PCI-compliant and built specifically to handle card data safely, so sensitive details are processed by Stripe's secure systems rather than stored on your site. We build the checkout so the payment is handled server-side and properly, giving customers a safe, trustworthy experience.

Why use Stripe instead of a marketplace like a ticketing site or Shopify?

Marketplaces are quick to start but take a cut of every sale and put their brand and their control between you and your customer. Building your own checkout on Stripe means you keep more of each sale, own the customer relationship and data, and present a seamless, on-brand experience. For the right business, that ownership is worth a lot.

Why does HDC use Stripe?

Because when the transaction is part of the product, ticketing, e-commerce, bookings, a business is better off owning its checkout than renting one. Stripe lets us build secure, reliable payments straight into your site, so you take money instantly, keep more of it, and stay close to your customer instead of handing them to a marketplace.
