Google Search Console
Google's own window into how your site performs in search, straight from the source.
Google Search Console is Google's free tool that shows how a website appears in Google Search: the terms people search to find it, how often it shows up and gets clicked, indexing issues, and mobile and Core Web Vitals health. HDC uses Search Console to make sure a site is properly indexed, spot and fix technical SEO problems, and understand the real searches bringing in visitors, so SEO is guided by Google's own data, not guesswork.
Where it shines
- Data straight from Google: real search terms, clicks, impressions and rankings
- Flags indexing problems, so pages you want found are actually found
- Reports Core Web Vitals and mobile usability issues to fix
- Lets you submit sitemaps and request indexing of new or updated pages
- Free, official, and the ground truth for how Google sees your site
- Shows which queries you rank for but could win more clicks on
Trade-offs to weigh
- Shows search performance, not on-page visitor behaviour (that's analytics)
- Data is sampled and slightly delayed, it's directional, not real-time
- Insightful, but acting on it still takes SEO know-how
What Google Search Console is
Google Search Console is Google’s free window into how your site performs in Google Search. It reports the actual search terms people use to find you, how often you appear (impressions), how often you’re clicked, and where you rank. It also flags the technical health that affects visibility: whether pages are indexed, mobile usability, and Core Web Vitals.
What makes it invaluable is the source. Other tools estimate; Search Console shows Google’s own data about your site. It’s the ground truth for how the world’s biggest search engine sees you.
How HDC uses Google Search Console
We treat Search Console as the foundation of any SEO work:
- We confirm the site is indexed, so the pages you want found are actually eligible to appear, and submit sitemaps and new pages for fast pickup.
- We fix what it flags, indexing errors, mobile issues, Core Web Vitals, so technical problems don’t quietly cap your rankings.
- We read the real queries, finding the searches where you rank just below the clicks and knowing exactly which pages to strengthen.
- We measure progress honestly, tracking impressions, clicks and position against the work we do.
Why we apply it
SEO goes wrong when it’s guided by guesswork. Search Console replaces guesswork with Google’s own numbers: the queries that bring you traffic, the pages that are (and aren’t) indexed, the technical issues holding you back. That means effort goes where it actually moves rankings, not where it feels productive.
It also catches silent failures. A page that isn’t indexed earns nothing, and without Search Console you might never know. Spotting and fixing that early is often the fastest SEO win there is.
How Google Search Console fits our stack
Search Console covers the “getting found” half of the picture, and pairs naturally with Google Analytics, which covers what visitors do once they arrive. Around it, SEMrush adds competitor and keyword research, and Bing Webmaster Tools gives the same insight for Bing. All of it monitors the fast, cleanly-built Astro sites we ship, whose speed and structure Search Console rewards with better indexing and Core Web Vitals scores.
When Google Search Console isn’t the whole answer
Search Console is essential, but it isn’t everything. It shows search performance, not on-site behaviour, so it needs analytics alongside it to see what happens after the click. Its data is sampled and slightly delayed, so it’s directional rather than a live dashboard. And the insight it surfaces still needs SEO know-how to act on well. As the official source of truth for how Google sees a site, though, it’s the first tool we set up and the one we check most.
Worked example
Finding the quiet wins Google already hands you
Picture a business whose new pages weren't showing up in Google, with no idea why. In Search Console we see several pages weren't indexed, submit the sitemap, fix the issues flagged, and request indexing. Within days they start appearing. The same reports reveal search terms the site ranks on page two for, close, but missing the clicks, so we know exactly which pages to strengthen. Instead of guessing at SEO, the work is pointed straight at what Google's own data says will move the needle. (Illustrative, every engagement is scoped to your goals.)

Google Search Console: your questions answered
What is Google Search Console?
Google Search Console is a free tool from Google that shows how your website is doing in Google Search. It reports the search terms people use to find you, how often you appear and get clicked, whether your pages are indexed, and any technical issues like mobile or Core Web Vitals problems. It's Google telling you directly how it sees your site.
How is Search Console different from Google Analytics?
Search Console is about how you appear in Google Search, before the click: which queries show your site, your rankings, indexing health. Analytics is about what people do once they're on your site. One covers getting found, the other covers what happens next. Used together, they give the full picture from search to enquiry.
Why does indexing matter?
If Google hasn't indexed a page, it simply can't appear in search, no matter how good it is. Search Console shows which pages are indexed and flags problems stopping others from being. We use it to make sure the pages you want found are actually in Google's index, and to submit new ones so they're picked up quickly.
Do I need Search Console if I already do SEO?
Yes, it's foundational. It's the only place you get Google's own data on your search performance and technical health, real queries, indexing status, Core Web Vitals. Any serious SEO work relies on it to confirm what's happening and to catch problems early. We set it up and use it on every site we optimise.
Why does HDC use Google Search Console?
Because good SEO is guided by real data, not hunches, and Search Console is that data, straight from Google. We use it to make sure your site is properly indexed, to fix technical issues that hurt rankings, and to find the searches where a little work would win you more clicks. It keeps our SEO honest and effective.
