What Azure is

Rather than buying and maintaining physical hardware, a business rents precisely the computing it needs and scales it up or down as demand changes, paying for what it uses.
Its particular strength is the Microsoft ecosystem. Azure is a first-class home for .NET applications and SQL Server databases, integrates tightly with Azure DevOps for deployment, and carries the enterprise security and compliance that larger and regulated organisations depend on. For the right kind of system, that combination is hard to beat.
How HDC uses Azure
We reach for Azure when a project needs enterprise-grade hosting and scale:
- We host Microsoft-stack applications on it, .NET back-ends and SQL Server databases sit naturally on Azure’s managed services.
- We deploy through Azure DevOps, so builds and releases flow cleanly and repeatably into the cloud.
- We scale on demand, so a system stays fast under load without paying for idle capacity the rest of the time.
- We build on its security and compliance foundations, with sensible configuration and access control, often with Cloudflare in front.
Why we apply it
Not every project is a marketing site. Some clients need a real, custom application, a system that holds their data securely, integrates with their tools and keeps working as they grow. That calls for hosting built for reliability, security and scale, and for a Microsoft stack, Azure is the natural choice.
Choosing it deliberately also means we don’t over-build. Azure earns its place on serious systems; a simple brochure site runs faster and cheaper elsewhere. Matching the host to the job is part of building responsibly, and where the job is a scalable, secure business application, Azure is the platform we trust to carry it.
How Azure fits our stack
Azure is one of the two clouds we build on, alongside AWS, and it’s the natural home for the Microsoft side of our work. A .NET application backed by SQL Server is built, tested and shipped through Azure DevOps and runs on Azure’s managed services, while Cloudflare typically sits in front for DNS, security and speed. So the Microsoft stack, language, framework, database, deployment and hosting, joins up end to end.
When Azure isn’t the right tool
Azure is superb for enterprise-grade, Microsoft-stack applications, but it isn’t the right host for everything. A standard marketing or content site runs faster, cheaper and simpler on lightweight hosting like Cloudflare, and forcing it onto Azure just adds cost and complexity. Azure’s pricing and breadth also demand active management to stay efficient. Where a project genuinely needs enterprise scale, security and Microsoft integration, though, it’s exactly where we turn.
Worked example
A business system built to grow
Picture a company outgrowing an off-the-shelf tool and needing a proper application, one that handles their data securely and won't buckle as they scale. We build it on a Microsoft stack and host it on Azure: the .NET application runs on managed Azure services, its data lives in a SQL database, and Azure DevOps deploys every update cleanly. Because Azure scales on demand and carries enterprise security and compliance as standard, the system stays fast and dependable as their usage grows, and the client isn't paying to run hardware they don't yet need. When does HDC choose Azure over AWS?
Both are excellent, and we choose per project. Azure is often the natural fit when a system is built on a Microsoft stack, .NET applications, SQL Server databases, or when a client already lives in the Microsoft ecosystem and values that integration. AWS may fit other projects better. We pick the host that suits the technology and the client, rather than forcing one everywhere.
Do I need Azure for my website?
Usually not for a standard marketing site, those run beautifully on lighter, faster hosting like Cloudflare, and we won't over-engineer. Azure earns its place for larger, custom applications and business systems that need enterprise security, serious scale or tight Microsoft integration. We match the hosting to what the project genuinely needs.
