ChatGPT Ads: how they work, and whether to start now
ChatGPT Ads are sponsored results shown beneath ChatGPT's answers to people on the Free and Go plans. OpenAI opened its self-serve Ads Manager to UK businesses on 6 June 2026. Clicks typically cost $3 to $5. The format is one image, one headline and one description, and there are no keywords to bid on.
ChatGPT Ads went from a closed pilot with a $200,000 minimum to something any UK business can switch on from a laptop, inside about six months. The self-serve Ads Manager opened to UK advertisers on 6 June 2026, and by early September OpenAI listed 52 countries as live.
The interesting part is not the technology. It is that almost nobody is in there yet, while the people asking ChatGPT what to buy are deep into a decision. That combination does not last. This is what the platform actually is, what it costs, and how we would approach it.

What a ChatGPT ad actually is
An ad is one square image, your advertiser name, one headline, one description and one link. That is the whole unit. There is no rotation set, no keywords, no match types, no sitelinks, no callouts and no display paths.
If you have run Google Ads, the instinct is to write a set of headlines and let the system assemble them. That instinct is wrong here and it will cost you. We built for this platform and initially wrote descriptions at Google length. They would have arrived cut in half on a phone.
Variation comes from building more ads, not from stuffing more lines into one.
- Headline: 50 characters maximum, but 16 to 24 is the range that reads properly on a phone
- Description: 100 characters maximum, 32 to 48 is the usable band
- Image: square, 640 to 1200 pixels a side, PNG or JPG. WebP is rejected
- Show the product in the image, not your logo
- The advertiser name is your ad account name, not a per-ad field, so get it right before you build anything
- One idea per ad
Who actually sees them
Ads appear only to adults on the Free and ChatGPT Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education subscribers see none, and OpenAI does not serve ads to anyone it identifies or predicts to be under 18.
This matters more than most coverage admits. The paying subscribers, who skew towards the professionals and higher earners many businesses most want to reach, are the exact people the ads cannot touch. If your buyer is a senior person at a company that expenses their tooling, a meaningful share of them are invisible to this channel.
For consumer and small-business audiences the reach is real. For enterprise software sold to people on Pro accounts, be honest with yourself about who is left.
How campaigns are built and targeted
The structure is campaign, then ad group, then ads. The campaign carries the objective, the geography, the budget and the dates. The ad group carries your maximum cost per click and your context hints. The ads sit underneath.
Context hints are the part that breaks people's mental model. You are not buying a keyword and waiting for an exact match. You are describing the kind of conversation your ad belongs in, and the system decides where that fits. It behaves more like audience targeting on Meta than keyword targeting on Google.
Geo-targeting, custom audiences and conversion measurement are all there. Measurement runs through the OpenAI Pixel and a conversions API, so you can optimise towards conversions rather than clicks once you have enough volume.
What it costs
Reported costs sit around $25 to $60 CPM and $3 to $5 per click, with $60 CPM listed as the default maximum bid. Costs are quoted in dollars because that is how the platform and the available benchmarks report them.
Cost per click varies sharply by sector. Ecommerce sits at the bottom of that range, around $3 to $5. Software and finance run far higher, roughly $8 to $18. Treat any single published figure as a starting point, not a forecast for your account.
There is no longer a minimum commitment. The $200,000 floor from the February 2026 pilot was removed when self-serve opened.
Is it worth running yet
Click-through rate is low compared with search. Industry figures put ChatGPT ads near 0.9 percent against roughly 6.4 percent for Google search. Those are not equivalent contexts, and a straight comparison flatters Google, but the direction is real: fewer people click.
What offsets it is intent. Early data from Criteo shows referrals from large language model platforms converting at about 1.5 times the rate of other digital channels. Someone who has just asked an assistant to help them choose is further down the decision than someone scrolling a results page.
The stronger argument is timing. OpenAI reported ChatGPT Ads passing a $1 billion annualised run rate in under 200 days. Auction prices follow advertiser density, and advertiser density is climbing. Whatever you can learn cheaply now gets more expensive to learn later.
How we would approach it
Start small and treat the first month as buying information rather than buying customers. A modest daily budget across several genuinely different ads will teach you more than one carefully agonised ad at a higher spend.
Get the conversion tracking in before the first pound goes out, not after. Optimising towards clicks on a channel whose whole advantage is conversion quality throws away the advantage.
Write for the format rather than adapting Google copy. Short headline, one idea, a product image that shows the thing itself. And fix your ad account name first, because it is what people see attached to every ad you run.
- Check your buyers are actually on Free or Go before committing budget
- Build several distinct ads rather than variations of one
- Install the OpenAI Pixel and confirm it fires before launch
- Keep a Google or Meta campaign running alongside as your control
- Review context hints weekly at first, they are the main lever you have
ChatGPT Ads against Google Search Ads, on the things that change how you build
| ChatGPT Ads | Google Search Ads | |
|---|---|---|
| How you target | Context hints describing the conversation | Keywords with match types |
| Copy per ad | One headline, one description | Multiple headlines and descriptions, assembled |
| Extensions | None | Sitelinks, callouts, structured snippets |
| Image | Required, square, PNG or JPG | Not used in standard search ads |
| Who sees it | Free and Go users, adults only | Anyone searching |
| Typical click cost | $3 to $5, higher in software and finance | Varies enormously by sector and geography |
| Competition today | Thin, the platform is months old | Saturated in most commercial categories |

Frequently asked questions
Can a UK business run ChatGPT Ads?
Yes. OpenAI opened the self-serve Ads Manager to UK advertisers on 6 June 2026, and you can set up an account directly without going through a sales team. By early September 2026 OpenAI listed 52 countries as available.
Do ChatGPT Plus subscribers see ads?
No. Ads are shown only to adults on the Free and ChatGPT Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education accounts are ad-free, and OpenAI does not serve ads to users it identifies or predicts to be under 18.
How much do ChatGPT Ads cost?
Reported figures are roughly $25 to $60 CPM and $3 to $5 per click, with $60 CPM as the default maximum bid. Software and finance click costs run considerably higher, around $8 to $18. There is no minimum spend since the pilot's $200,000 floor was removed.
Can I bid on keywords like I do in Google Ads?
No. There are no keywords and no match types. You give the ad group context hints that describe the kind of conversation your ad suits, and the system places it. It is closer to audience targeting than keyword targeting.
How do I measure whether it worked?
Through the OpenAI Pixel and a conversions API, which let you bid towards conversions rather than clicks. Install and test the pixel before you launch, because the channel's main advantage is conversion quality and you cannot see it if you only measure clicks.
Should I move budget out of Google Ads to fund this?
Not to begin with. Run it alongside what already works and keep your existing campaign as a control. The honest case for starting now is that the auction is still thin and learning is cheap, not that it will outperform a mature Google account in month one.
