Local SEO: How to Win Your Immediate Area

By HDC Consultancy Team · 15 June 2026 · 7 min read

What local SEO is, in one paragraph

Local SEO is how a business gets found by nearby customers on Google — in the map pack, on Google Maps, and in “near me” and “in [town]” searches. It’s driven by an optimised Google Business Profile, consistent name-address-phone details across the web, a steady flow of genuine reviews, and pages written for the specific areas you serve.

Search has become intensely local. When someone needs a plumber, a solicitor, a dentist or a decent lunch, they don’t research the whole internet — they search for what’s near them and choose from the first few results. For a business that serves a town or a region, that handful of miles around you is the entire battleground. Win it and the enquiries follow. This guide is the practical version: what actually moves the needle, in the order it matters.

The map pack: the three results that decide most local clicks

The “map pack” (or local pack) is the box of three business listings with a small map that Google shows for local searches, sitting above the normal blue links. Because it’s above everything else and answers the question visually, those three spots capture a large share of local clicks.

Getting into the map pack is a different job from ranking your website. It’s driven mainly by your Google Business Profile, how close you are to the person searching, your reviews, and how relevant and consistent your business information is. You can rank number one in the ordinary results and still be invisible in the map pack — which is exactly why local SEO is its own discipline, not just “SEO but smaller”.

Your Google Business Profile is a second homepage

Treat your Google Business Profile — the listing that appears on Google Maps and in the map pack — as seriously as your website, because for a lot of local searches it is the first thing people see and act on.

Fill in every field properly:

  • Primary category. This is one of the single biggest ranking levers, and most businesses pick something too vague. Be specific and accurate.
  • Services and products, each with a real description.
  • Service areas, opening hours (kept genuinely up to date), and a proper business description.
  • Real photos of your work, your team and your premises — not stock images.
  • Posts and Q&A. Post updates, and answer questions before a competitor does.

The common own-goals are all free signals left on the table: a vague category, empty services, no photos, and a profile nobody has touched in a year. A profile that says you’re open when you’re closed, or lists an old address, actively costs you enquiries and trust.

Reviews are the currency of local trust

Reviews do two jobs at once. They’re a direct factor in how you rank in the map pack, and they’re the most persuasive thing a potential customer reads before deciding to call you.

What matters isn’t just the number:

  • A steady flow of genuine reviews beats a burst of ten and then silence — recency counts.
  • A healthy overall rating, with enough volume to look credible.
  • Your replies. Responding to reviews, good and bad, signals an active, real business and often reassures the next reader more than the review itself.

The highest-leverage habit in local SEO is simply asking every happy customer for a review at the right moment — just after you’ve done good work, while they’re pleased. Make it easy with a direct link. And never buy or fake reviews: Google filters them, customers can smell them, and it can get your profile suspended.

NAP consistency: the boring detail that quietly decides rankings

NAP stands for Name, Address, Phone. Google cross-checks your details across your website, your Business Profile, directories, social profiles and industry listings. When everything matches exactly, Google trusts the information and is more confident ranking you. When it doesn’t — an old address in one directory, a missing “Ltd”, two different phone numbers — that confidence drops, and your visibility can drop with it.

It’s unglamorous work, but auditing your citations and making every listing identical is one of the most reliable local wins there is. It costs nothing but attention, and it fixes a problem most competitors never bother to.

Pages written for the places you serve

If you cover several towns, a single “Areas we cover” page rarely ranks for all of them. A genuinely useful page for each key location — written for that place, its area and the way local people actually search, rather than a templated copy with the town name swapped in — gives Google a clear, relevant page to rank for “[service] in [town]”.

The bar here is real content, not volume. Thin, duplicated doorway pages do the opposite of what you want and can be penalised. One well-written page per place you genuinely serve beats fifty near-identical ones.

Being listed accurately in reputable local and industry directories reinforces that you’re an established local business. A mention or link from the local paper, a chamber of commerce, a supplier you work with, or a community event you sponsor carries genuine local weight.

You don’t need hundreds. A handful of relevant, real citations and links beats a spammy directory blast every time — and won’t put you at risk.

How to know it’s working

Track the things that actually mean money, not vanity metrics:

  • Your ranking in the map pack for your key “[service] [town]” terms.
  • The calls and direction requests from your Google Business Profile — it reports these directly.
  • The enquiries that came from someone finding you locally.

Impressions and “views” matter far less than whether the phone rings and the diary fills.
